Thanksgiving Preparations

Yes. You may be thinking that this is a little early to start planning for Thanksgiving. But since the Fosters were handed over the tradition in 2005, it has evolved into THE place to be for this particular holiday. This is the day that The Infamous Unsociables open their front door to all friends and family and make up for the 364 days when we graciously decline all requests for hanging out.

We can't explain it. We get (happily) caught up in our own little world and the contentment of being home overpowers the fun factor of being sociable. I guess that's what you get when you merge the Martins with the Fosters, a happy, unsociable middle. :)

Anyway, as it turns out, the girl who could barely boil water as recent as our early marriage, has managed to master the art of a hip Thanksgiving hangout that seems to get better every year!

What does it take? Well, late September planning for starters. This week, I pulled out my past T-day menus and concocted a new menu out of the most successful recipes over the years, then added a couple new ones to spice it up a little, which I do every year! From this list, I itemize every ingredient to devise two separate lists: the perishable and non-perishable items. This list will now join me every time I hit the grocery store between now and the big day, precisely 9 weekends/trips to be exact. I will collect the non-perishables up until the last weekend, when the perishable items will get knocked out in one shot. Feeding 20+ people can be pretty expensive, so it's necessary to spread it out over time.

And this is one mammoth list for a mammoth menu. Maybe this will help to put it into perspective:
14 sticks of butter
11 cups of powered sugar
2 bags of flour
2 - 5lb. bags of sugar
10lbs. of potatoes
10 pkgs. of cream cheese
1 1/2 dozen eggs
and it goes on, and on, and on...

Aside from the shopping, having that many people in our house in one day can be a lot to handle so the next several weekends will be dedicated to getting the house into a presentable, Martha Stewart style, level. I've already made a list of a couple of projects that I'd like to see completed by then. Of course, given the number of unfinished projects in our house (far exceeding the typical family's norm) I can't expect to have them all done, but it's good to set goals! Hahaha!

And we can't forget the playlist! I started an ongoing list about a month or two ago of songs and bands that would be perfect for that day. It's coming along nicely, I must say.

And the menu? Well, I could keep it to myself, but it's so good this year that I can't help but flaunt it! Aside from Pop's fried turkeys and Grammy's homemade stuffing, this is my plan:

For Grazing:
Veggie Tray w/ Dip (Cucumbers, Broccoli, Mushrooms, Carrots....)
My Classic Cheese Ball w/ Crackers
Bread Bowl w/ Dip & Dipping Oil
Spicy Cheese Ball (new)
Ugly Dip (new)

Dinner Sides:
Mashed Potatoes
Yams
Cranberry-Raspberry Sauce
Biscuits
Green Beans w/ Glazed Shallots in Lemon-Dill Butter

Desserts:
2 Pumpkin Pies
2 Apple Cakes w/ Browned Butter Frosting
Cranberry Mousse Torte
Banana-Ginger Cake w/ Cream Cheese Frosting (new)
Turtle Tart (new)
Divinity
Marshmallows (for Roasting on the Fire)

Beverages:
Holiday Punch
Hot Cranberry-Apple Cider (new)
Beer

No. I won't pull this off by myself! My mom will surely come by and help me get things together the day before. Last year I had a few teenagers meandering around the house, so I put them all to work, too. A decision that worked out beautifully, I might add! We actually had a pretty enjoyable time and I hope they'll come back this year! The plan? I pretty much kill myself the day before so on the big day I can enjoy myself. There's still lots to do that day, don't get me wrong! But the pressure is VERY low! I just arrange the buffet and put things in the oven as needed!

Just a million things to obsess about! But I'm just the girl for the job! And in the end, whether five people stop by or twenty-five, all that matters in the end is that I spend my favorite day of the year with my family... with lots of food to eat! Hehe!

Until later...

We shook hands with the mayor today.

We always knew she was a winner, but today Kodee was recognized by the city, the school district, and the Texas Rangers for the number of steps that she recorded on her pedometer over the summer ~ 2.8 million, that is!!

What does she get as a reward? Well, aside from a personal visit from the mayor, the AISD superintendent, and the Rangers mascot, (along with a posse of at least 20, not including two news crews!) they handed her three tickets to a baseball game later this month (with a parking pass!) in a suite! We'll be joined with the mayor and his wife, as well! She was so stunned that she could hardly smile, and we're pretty sure that she turned sheet white when she realized that all of the attention was on her!! Hahaha!

Oh, AND she'll be on the news tonight ~ Channels 8 & 11, and watch for her in the Star Telegram!

We're so proud of you, Kodee! You set your mind to something and look what happened! You're a winner!

Congratulations, Kid!
YOU ROCK!!!

Things on my mind these days.

Fall is approaching. It's time to start thinking about Thanksgiving.
Recipes. Music. Food. Keg. People. House.
Gotta pick up the treadmill on Friday.
Four days off. Four days off with my husband. Wish we could drive away for three of them, alone.
Sad that we can't.
Still need metal edging for the backyard. $200.
Gotta save serious $ for Black Friday. Minimum $1500. Ugh.
I hate saving money.
Need to do something about this house. Too unmotivated to touch it.
Drama at work is wearing me out. If I didn't have self-restraint, I'd have slapped a *b* by now.
Thank God for self-restraint.
I work with the boys tomorrow. Freaking yes.
Homecoming.
Apparently I need a Mac to use my iPhone to its full extent. Great.
My dogs are in need of some major threats regarding the consumption of my plants.
I hate cooking dinner lately. I need some new ideas.
The vet cost me a fortune this week. I hate pet maintenance.
We're out of cat food.
Volleyball?
I thought of visiting the redwood forest and I cried.

For now.

No sooner did I finish this post, did the principal of Kodee's school call me. She's being recognized by the school district on Friday morning but they can't tell me why until then. It's also a surprise to Kodee. What could it be? How exciting!

Making Progress

The Fresh Bite
With the end of summer comes a billion things to do. Not major stuff, but it seems like I've had a thousand errands and phone calls to make over the last several days.

One thing that has resurfaced is Kat's dog bite situation. It's time to finalize everything with the insurance company, including the pictures of her arm. I found the progressive pictures today.

After Stitches
It's crazy how this experience has changed her. I'm not sure she will ever fully trust a dog again, or at best, a very long time. She even gets nervous with Tobi sometimes (but I think he messes with her on purpose sometimes ~ he can totally sense her fear!).

5 Months Later
School is almost here! I'm so thrilled! The environment at work is starting to change a little already. School faculty and administration are headed back to school and the pace is picking up a little. I can wait to get back to the insane normality of the school year!

I can't remember what year I got my class ring. Sophomore, maybe? What year are you supposed to get it? I introduced the idea to Kat yesterday, who had never heard of the tradition. I can't wait to get her one! JD was appalled that I told her about it! Hahahaha! He says we could have saved ourselves a few hundred! Ha! He's such a cheap old man! I love it! We go to the high school on Monday to buy our spirit wear and sign up for extracurricular activities. Yes, I said ours! Haha! I have to have my own MHS shirt! Yay for school spirit! (OMG - yearbooks are $75! A freakin' fortune! *gag*)

Anyway, there really hasn't been anything exciting going on around here lately, just the usual stuff. The latest WEEDS season started last night so Kat and I will start it today! The highlight of our day!!

So, until later...

PS: Is this gorgeous, or what?

I love my life.

This weekend was wonderful. I think it actually set the bar.

We had absolutely nothing planned. There was no place we had to be. There was no pressure to get anything done. Our goal was to do whatever was the least stressful, that didn't involve sitting in front of the TV.

Saturday started out with our usual run to the bank (after the typical coffee-and-HGTV/DIY-in-bed time) and a stop at Kroger for some deli meat and all the goods. Lunch for breakfast sounded like a fabulous idea, and what better than homemade deli sandwiches?

Next it was on to the first part of the day, working on the wainscoting in the living room. It may sound like a bore to some, but it's really great to turn on the music and sit around talking and laughing. We just happen to be sanding and staining while we chill! I have to admit though, I had no idea that a $40 project could turn into several weekends of work. I'll definitely think twice before I work with polyurethane again. It's to tedious!!

Anyway, after a few hours of this we decided that we'd had enough for the day. It was time to retire this project for another weekend. So we started cleaning up. And what started out as a small task turned into another hour of moving around, laughing, talking, and cleaning. When we were done, the house practically glowed! Now, this is an exciting factor considering the time that has past since I felt it had been this clean. We've done so many projects lately that no matter how hard I try, I can't seem to keep up with the misplaced items and the dust, and this weekend's little collective effort seemed to bring the planets back into alignment! Ahhh! To breathe again!!!

Every room sparkled! The beds were made. The floors were cleaned. The dust was gone. It was like a brand new house! Hehehe!

Now, when I mentioned that we had no particular goals for the weekend, I was mistaken. We only had four episodes of Dexter left (the 4th season) and it was our mission to finish them over the two days. So, Saturday was designated the first two and we all piled into the living room to do just that.
OMG!!! What an ending!!! We were so tempted to watch the rest!!! No! We must wait until tomorrow!!!!! So we piddled around until bed.

Sunday was the kicker.

What a beautiful day! Today we would wash the cars. We had been forced to park my car out in the driveway the previous weekend in order to finish the floors in the living room. It was quickly covered in sap and a record layer of dirt over the past week (and Cherri was, yet again, disappointed that I had let it get so bad), so it was a must. The truck seemed a little sad, sitting in its forgotten spot on the curb, taking in our overflow of brush and weeds over such a long period of time. It was due a little TLC. So we got out bright and early and started the process together.

And in the midst of soaping up the car, I looked around at my green grass and my pretty house, my handsome husband and my quiet little street, and it hit me like a brick in the face...

My God, I'm lucky.

I thought about the monetary things of course, the house, the cars, the stuff in general. I'm so proud of us. We've really kicked ass over the last few years.

But then I thought about the really important details ~ the four of us. Wow. In my best of days and with my most articulate of words, I could never adequately describe the overwhelming feeling of love and pride for my husband and my children. They are the most amazing people I will ever have the privilege of knowing in my entire life, and I am overwhelmed at times to think of how lucky I am that they are mine. Yes, mine.

And for the rest of the day this thought stuck with me. I'm so lucky.

Later that day we played our regular Sunday game of Monopoly. It was a little boring this time around (and JD was winning so brutally that he was pretty obnoxious to deal with) so we called it quits a before an official bankrupt.

But let me tell you... we finished the last two episodes, as planned! WHAT??!!?!?!?! Are you kidding me?? It really ended like that? No, no spoilers here, but I will say, I never expected this! I'm really okay with whatever happens as long as it just doesn't get cancelled!!! Everything good seems to!

So, Monday morning went as they normally do with lots to accomplish. I drove out to Waxahachie to drop off Sookie for her spay and ran a couple more errands. My outlook was a little more emotional than normal considering that my husband was out of town for work. It throws off my routine in the afternoons. Tobi was sad and pathedic, too. He was missing his Sookie and his daddy, so he wasn't very happy either.

Tuesday morning I woke up at 3am, as usual. Unusual for me was the idea that I should check my Facebook that early, which I don't normally do. That's when I read this on my wall:

Momma, I think you might be *the* coolest role model on the face of the planet.

& I love how we watch Weeds, just us, and you tolerate my extreme reactions.
& I think that it's the greatest that you work at Starbucks. Seriously, who's THAT cool, that they can just go work there? Plus it means that you're home when I get ho...me from school, I love that.
& I like that you can laugh at my stupid, stupid jokes that I probably shouldn't even be telling my mother, then call me while you're out with Josh two days later just to ask, "What was the punch line again?" hahaa
& I think it's cool that I enjoy shopping with you better than with my friends.
‎& I like that you're doing my summer reading assignment with me. Except that you haven't read Night yet, I actually finished a book before you.

& I secretly enjoy helping out with dinner on the occasional night, or four'o'clock rather. As long as it's easy, I've ruined too many Rice dinners&Brownies.
& I like how you're going to read this when you get up for work in the morning and be like.... 'umm, that's seriously not my daughter?'
& I like listening to you talk to know-it-alls over the phone, because you're so confident and always leave them feeling stupid after you tell them they're wrong.
& I really appreciate how you had my back with the whole 'Boles' thing.
& I like sitting next to you in Monopoly, and how we always roll sevens and doubles.

& I l0ooo000oooo0ooove how you don't change the channel from Tosh.0, you watch it with me.
& I'm most of all, proud of having you as my mother. When I get older, have a career, family and home of my own, I want to be just like you.
And I hope EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOUR FRIENDS ENDS UP READING THIS, because I told you via facebook, as an excuse to brag about my cool freaking Mom.
I love you, Madre!
[Kylee]

Needless to say, this made me a little weepy. I'm so lucky. And when I read it to Cherri & Billy at work later on that morning, I proceeded to cry my makeup off. Yes. I blubbered.

So this week has been worth writing about in the best possible ways! We picked up Kodee's school supplies today and Kat's FRESHMAN schedule pick-up is tomorrow morning! This stage in my life is really blowing me away.

Oh, and the spay only cost me 65 bucks! Haha! Yeah, I'd say it's been a pretty good week so far!

I'm so lucky.

Oh yeah... tonight's movie was "Legion". Eh. You know, I love Dennis Quaid, but I'd really like to see him in another something bad ass. This was not it. 2 out of 5.
Speaking of "Bad Ass"... not bad. I don't think I was in love with it, but the unusual take on the super hero story combined with the action-packed violence kept me watching. Cool. I'll give it 3 out of 5 stars.

One last thought

An extremely accomplished day (though still slightly overwhelmed), some quality time where time was needed, and a dinner that was good enough to blog about (and someone mentioned that I should *wink*, so even better!).

Overall, a decent day.

Sleep tight!
~n~

Dinner: Stubbs marinated chicken on iceberg, romaine, cucumbers, Colby jack, parmasean, kidney beans, tomatoes, avacado, croutons, bacon bits, & green onions.

(And usually hard boiled eggs, but I forgot to make them in advance... Bummer!)

So tired.

Sigh. The most important thing that we wanted to accomplish today involved as little movement as possible. So, we ended up starting the wainscoting project in the living room.

I know, I know! It seems that a project would be the last thing to do when trying to relax, but who wants to sit in front of the TV all day? The sun sucks the life out of the body. Chores involve too much movement. But sitting on the floor, laughing and talking, playing and listening to good music... Nothing beats a nice, relaxing day at home. No pressure. Just chill.

Perfect.

Oh, and it looks amazing.
:)

Friday, I thought you'd never come.

A miserable week, to say the least, but it's finally over. To improve matters, which I didn't think was possible on a day like today... MY CHILDREN HAVE OFFICIALLY LEFT THE BUILDING.

O.M.G. (rub the eyes... refocus... is it really true?)

Yesterday's thoughts: Friday would be better. Nevermind the drilling on my mouth... today would be Friday! Psh... I can handle anything! Friday! Friday!!!!

Well, 3am comes around pretty quickly when you've had the poo beat out of you the day before. I woke up feeling like I'd been punched in the face several times. It's okay, though. Think positive!

Sit and drink some coffee. Take an Advil or two. Get motivated. No problem.

And as my thoughts kicked in in the shower, like they always do, they turned more belligerent than efficient. By the time I got to work I vented to Cherri and got myself all worked up. Not only did talking about it NOT help, but I realized how crappy this week really was, and how exhausted I really am, and it only made me want to cry, which I did on my 10 minute break (which quickly became 15 so I could pull myself back together).

Work sucked. I had a great crew, as expected, but nothing could turn me around. One cup of coffee, two Excedrin, and four shots of espresso later ~ my jaw ached, my head pounded, my mood was dark, I looked like poo (having cried off all of my makeup), and everything irritated me.

Eventually I made it to 10:00 (the longest 5 hours of my life) and crawled back into bed by 11. Three hours later I woke up with a stuffy head and a stiff jaw. What could improve me today? It wasn't looking good.

But I never imagined that sitting here with my brats, listening to music and piddling around on the Internet could lift my spirits, but it did. Leave it to the monsters to get me mellowed out and laughing again. And no sooner did they lift me up, but Grammy showed to take them home with her for the night.

So now I'm sitting here alone in the dark, blogging in the sweet, precious silence of a wonderful Friday afternoon. Perfect.

I think I'll move down to the sofa where I can really get comfortable. Find a movie. Think about nothing.

Ahhh. Hello, Friday.

Sigh.

Wednesdays are poo.

I'm really not a big fan of Wednesdays. It's kinda been a sucky week and we're only half way through. Ugh.

Today was another uneventful day. The best part had to be the super, amazing nap that lasted a solid two hours. I usually set an alarm clock to keep me from getting too carried away, but I don't typically need it. Today was the exception! I probably could have rolled back over and slept longer, but that would have qualified me for feeling guilty, so my bliss eventually came to an end.

These kids are driving me insane. I wish I were the type to keep them entertained all summer, but I'm beginning to think they enjoy being lazy for a while. Who can blame them, really. I just wish they got along better. This house would be so much more peaceful and pleasant. Instead, I'll just count the days till they go back to school. Little @&"$#%!

I'm going to the dentist tomorrow. Yay. I have to get three or four fillings. I've only had one other in my life, maybe twenty years ago, so I have no idea what's in store for me. On a positive note, Kat has to get a couple, too, so we can suffer together. Cool.

I'm looking forward to the weekend. My house needs a major dusting, more than one person can handle. The floor grinding reeked major havoc on the dusting situation. It's going to take the whole village to tackle this one.

Aside from the dusting, a little relaxing is in order. We got our asses handed to us this past weekend, he's worked longer days this week, and the heat sucks. So aside from the typical stuff and a little forced socializing, we're counting on hiding.

As for now, it's movie time. Tonight it's "Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief".

Well, until tomorrow...

These are the good nights.

Hangin out just talking while we cook. Tonight it's Manwich on rice. Yummy.

How's it look?

My first blog on my first real blog site.
I'm curious to see how this works out.
